Coil Pots with Relief Texture
Repetition with Variety
Relief means to raise. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background.
For this assignment your goal is to create a coil pot with a raised relief surface decoration with a repetitive motif.

A work must have Variety to be exciting.
Unity (harmony) is achieved through repetition of one or more "element of design"(line, shape, value, texture, color). but too much repetition of the same thing can create a boring, predicatble work of art. Therefore, one must employ "repetition with variety" to achieve a piece with cohesion, but which is also interesting.
Its a balancing act...too much variety and you lose your harmony, creating chaos, too little variety and it's boring and uninteresting.

1. SKETCH out 8 different vessel forms using properly balanced proportions and accurate perspective.
2. PRACTICE 5 repetitive organic relief textures and apply them to 4"x4" clay tiles. Roll out the clay on the slab roller and cut into the square tile.
3. Think of ways to create many multiples quickly. If your repetitive motif is time consuming or too complex you will not finish on time. Making stamps or using objects for impressing are a couple of ways to make the creation process go faster. Consider additive and subtractive methods of design. Just remember the final design must be raised to be considered a relief.
4. Determine which vessel form works best with the preferred texture and begin coiling.
5. Do Not let your pot dry out before you are done applying or carving your repetitive relief.
