Establishing Limits - 8 Day Project
This project is designed to keep you focused by limiting your choices. Sometimes when faced with too many decisions our brains freeze up, unable to take the next step forward. For this project you will need to explore your creativity within a very narrow set of parameters. By working in this fashion you should have a very sharp focus and work quickly towards your goal.
You have exactly 8 days to complete this project. Read the instructions very carefully.
DAY 1 & 2
Use a full sheet of illustration board and cover the entire board with a collage of torn pieces of different kinds of paper. You can use any kind of paper. Receipts, newspaper, paper bags, old homework, wrapping paper etc.
- You can only use a maximum of 10 pieces of paper.
- Pieces must be torn into a rectangle or square shape.
- Glue down with matte medium.
- You must finish this step within 2 class periods.
DAY 3
Use white and then mix two other acrylic paint colors and paint over areas of the board leaving other areas without paint. That's 3 colors total- the white, plus the two colors you mixed.
- You must paint with a large brush
- Paint very loosely and expressively (large loose brush strokes ,splatters, drips, etc.)
- Use ONLY white and the two other colors you chose.
- Use more of one color and less of the second.
- You must finish this step in one class period.
Use good composition practices! Do not choose objects too small or too far away. Do not choose closed shapes without negative spaces or surface details.
DAY 4, 5 & 6
- Draw your chosen object on your board lightly with pencil
- Use only contour line to draw your image which means plenty of surface details.
- It must fill at least ¾ of the space and go off at least 2 edges.
- You must finish this step within 3 class periods
- Choose one more color and paint around the outer edges of your drawing.
- Paint color must be a complement to one of your other chosen colors.
- Completely fill in some negative spaces with complementary paint color.
- DO NOT completely outline the entire drawing with the paint. Leave some areas free from paint and make other areas thicker.
- Color should loosely blend into background and maybe even go to the edges in an area.
- You must finish this step in one class period.
Outline your pencil drawing with ink.
- You may choose to use a tech pen or a calligraphy quill dipped in ink (preferred method)
- You must finish this step in one class period.
