NEGATIVE SPACE and NARRATIVE
Using toned paper, draw a portrait utilizing specific areas of negative space within the composition. Well balanced areas of negative space should be purposefully placed within the drawing and should not look as though the drawing is just unfinished. The use of negative space should be an important part of the composition and not just the background. It may be worked into the figure or into other areas integral to the composition.
A narrative tells a story. Creative use of your negative space should be an important element in your composition that surprises with viewer with it's unconventional use. The implied meaning behind it should help drive your story. Remember to keep some mystery. Leave room for multiple interpretations, there is no need to spoon feed it to the viewer. -------------OTHER REQUIREMENTS------------- The majority of the drawing will be done in black and white charcoal on toned paper but may include areas of other media. Areas of other media or color can also be part of the narrative and will be emphasized within the composition. The definition of “portrait” will be applied loosely to this assignment. You may include more of the body than the face in order to compose the proper amount of negative space and to support the narrative.
